Albemarle girls and boys traveled to Cary, NC this past weekend to race in the massive Great American XC Festival. The varsity were in the Seeded race which ran very fast this year multiple girls in the 18 minute range! In fact Arianna DeBoer ran a lightning fast 19:06 to place 18th and have a 7 second PR. Next for the Varsity girls was Madeline Kronebusch who came very close to breaking 20 minutes and ran 20:07 - still a minute faster than her Great Meadows opener which is very impressive. Meme Zarzyski came through right by her in 20:28. Sarah Leech ran within ten seconds of her PR! Hannah Guyton and Beth Shifflett ran strong together and both dipped under 21! Cassidy Guyton had a major PR of almost 40 seconds to get the whole squad under 21:10.
In the JV race we were able to have two full teams this year and our depth really showed - one team won the race and the other placed 6th! Both Abby Murphy and Savannah Meriwether placed in the top 5 and ran huge PR's that would have placed them in the thick of the varsity girls' times. Olivia St Amand ran a minute PR and has continued to impress this year with her dedication to both soccer and running. Lillian Peskova and Eva Weaver both ran together under 21:45. Bella Popovsky ran almost TWO MINUTES faster than her previous PR and Aimee Straka and Laura Buddington ran right with her. Lily Williams like Olivia showed her all the work she puts in every day both at running and soccer and ran a minute PR. Grace Kohler, Lenora Brouwer, and Anya Rothman ran solid times within 4 seconds of each other and did a great job pacing each other through the race. Kate Fard ran a season's best of 23:22 to round out the two strong teams!
Great job everybody, the Albemarle Invitational should be awesome! While it is not as fast as Great American, it is our home course and we have spent all season working hard up its hills so we are ready!
