In a tough field this year - the girls races together averaged a whole 25 seconds faster than last year - Albemarle had a strong showing at our big home meet. The day started off with the varsity girls race where we were allowed to race eight athletes. Arianna Deboer set a lifetime PR of ten seconds dipping under 19 for the first time and running 18:56. Meme Zarzyski ran a time consistent to last year in 20:28. Madeline Kronebusch also broke 21 placing in the top 50. Abby Murphy proved her drastic improvement that she has had over the season and ran the second fastest time of her life in 21:02. Beth Shifflett, Hanna Guyton, and Cassidy Guyton, all worked together to come in around 21:30. Sarah Leach finished out the Varsity girls in 22:28.

In the JV race the girls narrowly missed out on winning the race shirts coming in second to Western Albemarle by 12 points. Lillian Peskova led our girls clocking her second best time of the season in 22:20. Aimee Straka and Lenora Brouwer came through together in 22:40 and 22:42. Kate Fard ran 23:28 coming within 6 seconds of her season's best time set at Great American. Anna Gazewood ran a PR in 23:56 and Catherine Zimmerman came in with a 24:41. Chrissy Leech and Kate Monroe worked together to both come through in PR's of 25:01 and 25:04. It was amazing to watch the girls stick with their teammates and push up the course's hard hills! Izzy Hecmanczuk and Carmen Edmonds ran together just above 26:45 and were followed by the duo of Nora Giesecke and Kate Hafemeister. Audrey Melzer followed them in running 27:20. Chaira Wernecke, still recovering from knee issues, ran a 29:12. Merritt Scherer ran a solid 30:10 in her first race of the season. Georgia Costain and Kelly Graves followed her through rounding out our great JV squad.

In the Freshman Race, Olivia St Amand took control early on and ended up second overall running a life time best of 20:56 a very good time on this hilly course! Eighth grader Eva Weaver ran with a pack of girls came in 10th overall with a 21:50 finish. Bella Popovsky ran a 23:45 and Anya Rothman followed her in in 23:28, despite getting cornered and cussed at by another girl in the second mile (don't worry she beat her). Laura Buddington put in a solid time after a week of mostly cross trained miles. Mary Govan ran just off of her goal in 26:39. Avani Abhyankar ran 32:41 in her first race and was chased in by teammate Elise Guiffre. The team of Freshman (and an eighth grader) earned the super cool Albemarle Invitational Dry-Fit shirts for their win!

Congrats on the great times! Can't wait for the District meet which will take place on the 23. Photos from the Albemarle Invitational can be found in the photo album!
