The girls headed out to Monticello High School this Wednesday to compete in their first 5k of the season against the Mustangs. The goal was to go out in a controlled effort and dial down the pace mile by mile to get a solid first race in. Temperatures were in the seventies and over forty degrees higher than the weather in practices this week so it was a big adjustment and everyone learned lessons about the importance of proper hydration. Despite the change all of our girls finished their races strong and did their part for the team, which lead to a perfect score (15!) and a sweep of all of the top seven spots in the girls varsity race.
Arianna DeBoer won the individual title in a time of 20:00 with Cassidy Guyton right behind in a very impressive 20:16. Team Newbies Jenna Coleman (21:09) and Maddie Gypson (22:12) both ran smart races with Madeline Kronbusch, Olivia St. Amand, and Bella Sonen rounding out the top seven all coming in with times under 23:10 on the tricky course. The varsity scoring squad (top 5) averaged 21:15 to beat Monticello by 35 points.
Also in the girls varsity race Lillian Peskova finished very strong (kicking hard to nearly give us 8 girls ahead of Monticello's #1) to run 24:07 and she was followed in by freshman Eva Weaver. Bella Popovsky ran 24:12 and Anya Rothman came in thirteenth with a 24:37.
In the open JV race freshman Alexis Alms led the way for the Patriots in 24:55 with Savannah Meriwether finishing second in 25:07. Izzy Hecmanczuk had one of the best finishes of the day sprinting in with freshman Scarlett Morse for third and forth overall. Shelby Owed in her first race for Albemarle ran 29:15 and sophomores Elise Guiffre (36:04) and Avani Abhyankar (37:57) rounded out the rest of our athletes.
