Our Depth Shows at District Championship

Racing at Districts this year we withheld our top four girls, but the JV team really showed up! Milesplit recently published an article ranking our JV team second in the state and although this meet was not scored for teams in their race, they would have won the open division by a crazy 25 points.

After the bus ride from AHS and a quick preview of the course, the girls varsity race kicked off. Olivia St Amand placed 6th overall, running 21 flat. Hanna Guyton and Beth Shifflett ran together coming in at 21:40 and 42. All three of these girls will join Arianna Deboer, Meme Zarzyski, Madeline Kronebusch, and Abby Murphy, who did not race today, at our state and regional meet. Cassidy Guyton ran a 22:08 to finish right behind them and Lillian Peskova finished in 22:48. Sarah Leach ran a 23:40 and really fought hard to charge up the last hill, even when she wasn't having a great race. Grace Kohler finished off our squad with a 25:06.

In the Open/JV race we had a large crowd go out strong. Savannah Meriwether ran right with the leader for most of the race and then kicked away in the last mile to run 21:01 and win the whole race! Eva Weaver came in third, running 21:54 after following a Western runner the whole way and then finishing just a second ahead of her! Both these girls, being eighth graders will compete at VHSL Middle School States this weekend and we can't wait to see what they can do! Bella Popovsky and Lilly Williams came in at 23:02 and 23:18, respectively. Then Anya Rothman ran a 23:28 -- putting all of our would be scorers in the top 10 places, and as freshmen and eighth graders this is very exciting! Kate Fard and Lenora Brouwer had a sprint finish, and both clocked 23:43. Anna Gazewood ran a PR in 23:54 two seconds faster than last week's Albemarle Invitational. Catherine Zimmerman and Laura Buddington both made it in the top 25, making it 10 of our girls who did that! Kate Monroe ran 25:30, her second fastest time ever, and Mary Govan ran 26:24, a PR. Izzy Hecmanczuk and Carmen Edmonds ran together for 26:38 and 26:40 finishes. Kate Hafemeister was our last girl to break 27 minutes and Audrey Melzer and Merritt Scherer came through strong after her. These girls did a great job of staying on pace, even when they found themselves alone on Fluvanna's wooded course! Avani Abhyankar in her second race of the season had a two minute PR and was followed in by her teammate Rachel Bels who finished within 15 of her time. Chloe Davis ran 32:50 and Kelly Graves and Elise Guiffre rounded out our stellar JV team.

Great job this season ladies! This was the end of our regular season races and VHSL regionals and states are up next for the top 10-12 girls followed by Nike Regionals. It was great to run with all of you this season and see the crazy amount of improvement!
