On a cool morning in Earlysville, the Patriots raced a two mile at their home course of Panorama Farms and won in dominant fashion. Smiles were all around and it was clear that everyone had come to race from the way that they got down to business. The race is typically a four person relay with hand offs between each of the relay members. This year due to COVID there were no hand offs and the racing started in waves but the girls adapted very well and were able to place our A and B team in the first two slots overall.
Arianna DeBoer continued her winning streak and took the individual race by 41 seconds. Her time of 11:36 is one of the fastest ever on this course and only two seconds behind x6 state champion and former Albemarle runner Ryann Helmers from 2017. Sophomore Jenna Coleman ran a very speedy leg of 12:17 to place second with Cassidy Guyton running 1:27 faster than last year in 12:24. Maddie Gypson came within 20 seconds of her track 2 mile PR, which is an insane thing to do on this hilly course, to run 12:32 for 4th. Olivia St. Amand and Madeline Kronebusch, despite running in separate waves came in within seconds in 13:10 and 13:12. Bella Sonen dropped 59 seconds from her time last year to place 8th and give Albemarle 7 out of the top 8 runners. Lillian Peskova, also running for our second team got 8 of Patriot girls under 14 by running 13:56.
Savannah Meriweather continued to drop time and was our 9th finisher today just missing a top 15 finish. Fellow freshman Eva Weaver dropped 58 seconds from her time trial to run 14:52 and
Anya Rothman ran 38 seconds faster than last year in 15:00. Bella Popovsky ran 15:20 to get 12 of Patriots in the top 30. Senior Izzy Hecmanczuk stunned with another huge PR and ran 1:26 faster than her time trial in 16:29. Freshman duo Scarlett Morse and Shelby Owed placed 45th and 48th with Elise Guiffre running 23:03 and Avani Abhyankar in 23:18.
Congratulations to all the girls on a great race and special thanks to the coaches and ever-amazing cheer/photo squad of Hanna Guyton and Halle Barredo. Their awesome photos can be found here underneath the "Photo Album" page and race results here: http://results.blueridgetiming.com/2021/cup/
